More Swimming Pool Terms

Regardless of whom you hire as your phoenix pool builders, there are some terms and professional jargon used in the building and maintaining of a swimming pool that you will need to know. Here we offer a brief guide to some of the more commonly used expressions.

DIATOMACEOUS EARTH – This refers to the dry powder that serves as the filtering medium of the DE filter in the swimming pool, which is the fossilized remnant of ancient plankton.

DIMATOMACEOUS EARTH FILTER – A swimming pool filtering tank which uses grids covered in fabric to hold the DE powder up against the water flow.

DIVERTER VALVE – This refers to a valve which is used as part of a twin port skimmer system in order to allow the user to control the amount of flow from the skimmer and the main drain to the pump.

DPD – This refers to a way of testing the level of chlorine in the water of the swimming pool.

ELBOW – This simply refers to a forty five degree or ninety degree plumbing fitting that is used when the pipes in your swimming pool need to take a turn.

ELECTROLYSIS – This refers to the method of using an electrical current in order to separate chemically bonded compounds and elements.

FILTER – This simply refers to a device which is used to remove particles from the water by pumping it through a porous material.

FILTER ELEMENT – This is the device that is installed within a swimming pool filter tank to trap solids and direct water out of the filter.

FILTER PUMP – This is the device that pumps water from the pool itself, though the filter tank, and then back into the pool.

FILTRATION RATE -This refers to the speed with which the swimming pool water is pumped through the filter tank and back out into the pool, for example so many gallons per minute.

FILM-X – This refers to a citric acid compound which is used in order to clean plaster and other areas of the swimming pool, frequently employed as a safe alternative to the use of muriatic acid for the same function.

IMPELLER – This refers to the rotating vanes of a centrifugal pump, which is driven by an electric motor in order to create the flow of water in a swimming pool.

INFLUENT – This refers to the water that is reaching the impeller from the suction lines.
